Over the last few years, the pricing for thermal transfer ribbons has remained quite stable – if anything, the competitive nature of the market has been forcing pricing downwards.
At the moment however, that situation is changing. The main culprit is the polyester film that is used as the carrier for the ink in the ribbon rolls. There is a serious supply issue because there is only a limited supply of these films and the manufacturers have discovered profitable, high demand applications for these films in consumer electronics and solar technology that is causing the price to increase to thermal ribbon manufacturers.
If you use thermal transfer printing in your labeling operations, you can expect to see price increases for wax, wax resin and resin thermal ribbons by the end of the year – regardless of which manufacturers products you use.
